In this short, easy to read book, Dr. Dooley gives an overview of homeopathy, including examples of how it works, what to expect, case examples, and it’s history. Overall it is a great book to give you a basic understanding of the art (and science) behind homeopathy, and can answer many of the questions someone who is new to homeopathic care is likely to have.
The book begins with a broad comparison between homeopathic medicine and the current medical paradigm, allopathic medicine. It describes homeopathy as whole person medicine, and likens it to the round earth. Likewise, it describes allopathic medicine as disease based medicine, likening it to the view of earth as being flat. Hence the title of the book, Beyond Flat Earth Medicine. It suggests that historically we have seen that current accepted thought does not always prove to be true, and that this is the case with current medical thought.
Throughout the book, Dr. Dooley gives concise explanations of the methods, science, and history behind homeopathy. He explains how it was discovered, and the intense scientific method used in the provings of the remedies conducted by the father of homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann.
Dr. Dooley addresses common questions you may have as a person new to homeopathy. “How long will it take until I notice a difference?” “How long until I am completely well?” “How will I know I am getting better?” He uses the book to give a detailed description of the process of homeopathy including what to expect from remedies. In the chapter entitled “How to Get Results” Dr. Dooley encourages commitment to homeopathy as a primary intervention, giving reassurance through examples throughout the book that it is very effective for both acute and chronic conditions. He also gives advice to help readers give their doctor the best possible information to help him/her truly understand them as an individual experiencing a certain condition, not just the condition itself.
The book rounds itself out with explanations of how homeopathic treatment works with conventional and other alternative therapies. Dr. Dooley expertly advises that many natural therapies, including vitamins, may be used in the same ways as pharmaceutical drugs. In high doses they can force an action on the body that it would not do on its own. Homeopathy gently stimulates the body to heal without the brute force even natural therapies may apply. Although in most cases homeopathy is able to stand alone as a method of treatment, he describes other natural therapies that, like homeopathy, stimulate the body’s natural process of healing and can be safely used alongside homeopathic treatment.
I recommend this book to all of my patients and anyone curious about the basics of homeopathic medicine. It will answer many initial questions and give you the background you need to help you get the most out of your homeopathic treatment.
